消防技術安全所では、災害が複雑多様化するなかで、都民の安全を守り、安心を支えるとともに、災害現場における消防隊員の安全確保と効果的な活動を行うための科学的見地に立った検証と技術改良を実施しています。
また、特異災害が発生した場合には、消防部隊として災害現場へ出場し、採取した試料の分析、現場指揮本部に対する災害活動及び安全管理についての助言等の活動支援を行っています。
The Fire Technology and Safety Laboratory carries out scientific tests and technological improvements to ensure the safety of residents and on-scene firefighters and to improve the effectiveness of firefighters’ operations.
When an unusual disaster occurs, the Laboratory sends a team of firefighters to the scene, who analyze collected samples, and give advice to the incident commander on damage mitigation and safety management.

装備工場では災害現場等において消防車両、消防器具及び消防ロボットを早急に修復できる体制を整えており、災害から都民を守るための組織として位置付けられています。
平常時には消防車両をはじめとして、各種消防機械器具の性能や機能が十分に発揮できるよう年間17,672件に及ぶ点検整備を行うとともに、消防職員に対する整備技術指導を実施しています。（数値は平成26年度中）
The Maintenance Shop sends its members over to disaster scenes to help firefighters achieve their life-saving task with their technology in the best condition. Specifically, the Maintenance Shop goes out and provides quick services on the spot, repairing vehicles and equipment including firefighting/rescue robots.
In 2014, the Maintenance Shop conducted regular mechanical checking and maintenance 17,672 times to keep vehicles and equipment working in an appropriate manner, and also gave technical guidance to fire department members.
